Twenty-year-old Luis Cano remembers the first time he stepped into Jesse Torres’ gym some three years ago.

“It was kind of intimidating. Really loud,” said the oldest of three Oswego brothers who had decided that day to tag along with his father Felipe’s good friend — ‘Uncle Carlos’ — who occasionally trained at the facility at 517 Union Street in Aurora.

Forty of the nation’s top boxers moved one step closer to earning a 2011 National Golden Gloves title with a quarterfinal victory on Thursday night at the Indiana Convention Center in Indianapolis. Thursday’s victors advanced to the semifinal round, which will be contested on Friday night.

After talking to six professional promoters, Harrison and his father and trainer, Buddy Harrison, along with his mother, Lynda Hernandez, decided to take a trip to Memphis, Tenn., where they were welcomed by Prize Fight Boxing promoters Brian Young, Russ Young and Nate Yoder.

Little Time for Celebration as Paris Coach Rabaud Prepares for the Finals

Paris United's head coach has had little time for celebrating his team's spectacular qualification for the WSB finals after beating the mighty Baku Fires 5-0 at home in the second leg of the semi-finals. As a national coach and Deputy Technical Director of the national team, Kevinn Rabaud worked with coaches John Dovi and Luis Mariano Gonzalez to help Paris United's boxers finish top of the European conference and ultimately qualify for the 2010-2011 WSB Team Championship Finals in Guiyang, China, far exceeding the team's expectations of merely qualifying for the play-offs.
